MAY DAY: THE AFTERPARTY (a CHRONICA 2007 presentation) is rapidly approaching, so I thought I'd take some time to recall ancient history. Last year, at just about this time, two young men had a dream. The dream was to achieve a more perfect union of the worker's movement and the getting hammered movement. The outcome was the first MAY DAY party.
Above is the first flyer that was sent out for this party. Note, first of all, the bold monochrome. Note, second of all, the subtle chavista slogan in the bottom right. This was to be a theme throughout the three flyers. In retrospect, it may have been a mistake. By hitching our cart onto just one horse, we may have vitiated the prismatic, multi-faceted strength of anti-capitalism.
This year, the workers' AFTERPARTY will be an AFTERPARTY for all workers, regardless of which counter-hegemonic Latino politician they most favour. That being said, there is at least a plurality on the Manning Avenue Round Table on the Political Economy that is optimistic for the prospects of economic democracy in Venezuela.
